Lingo, Jargon, and Acronyms (LJA)

This is one to which we'd like everyone to contribute.  For the average person, new to the site (or any Martial Art site), we'd like to have a nice, user-friendly page to assist them should they run into any jargon we use.  This is a work in progress.  Just add your suggestion/comment at the bottom.  Thank you!

DICTIONARY

Dan:  Category of rank in Japanese and Korean martial arts.  For example, 1st Dan, 2nd Dan, etc.  In other styles, "degree" is also used for a black belt rank (1st degree black, 2nd degree black, etc.)

Dojo:  A Japanese word, literally meaning "A place of the way."  It is a Japanese Martial Art school.  Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, Kendo, and other Japanese martial arts.  For example, you cannot call Kung Fu school a "dojo" and be politically correct because Kung Fu is a Chinese art.

Kata:  A Japanese word describing a choreographed pattern of techniques and movements pertaining to combat.  In other styles, these are called "forms."

Sensei:  A Japanese Martial Art teacher.  Everybody should know this term from pop culture, but just in case ;-)
